Who I Am and What I Do
In my former life, I had a standard biography here, listing my professional education and specializations.
But the time has come for brutal honesty.
I'm a relic of a vanished empire.
I wander the Earth in search of solidarity, and sometimes find it -- all in the hope, to paraphrase Brecht, of making the sleep of the Lords of Capital less easy.
It was my fate to exit the imperial superstructures of America moments before they crashed and burned.
I graduated grade school just before budget cuts destroyed K-6. I graduated high school just before the Reagan-era cuts devastated K-12. I graduated college just before the small liberal arts universities capsized. I graduated from Comparative Literature just before the literature job market disintegrated. I graduated from Communications just before the communications job market melted down. Finally, I left America on a world tour just as a transnational crime lord masquerading as a game show host began to burn my homeland down to an ash-heap of grift and repression.
But I continue to exist. And subsist. And resist.
Because of the many who reached out and helped me along the way.
Because of the globe-spanning networks of the digital commons.
Because of all the amazing works of art I have ever been privileged enough to see, hear, read and play through.
Because of the sight of a single child, rediscovering the magic and mystery and wonder of life.
Because of Bears. (And Monkeys!)
Because I am just one of the 8 billion workers on this planet.
Because we, the 8 billion, are done with oppression. We are done with hate. We are done with empire. We are done with war. We are done with carbon extinction. We are done with despair. We are done with capitalism.
We will be ruled by these monsters no more.
Because we have a planet to save. And worlds upon worlds, stars upon stars, and galaxies upon galaxies to win.
Nothing ends now. Everything begins!
